Basic Unimog 404 Axles
Description:
Sold with pinion conversions. Our basic axle. Drum brakes, stock Unimog bolt pattern, can be used with commonly available 16.5 inch rims. Pinion conversions (included) remove the original Unimog torque tube and replace it with a standard flat flange. Your choice of bolt patterns on the flange.
  • Steering axles measure approximately 69 inches from rim flange to rim flange.
  • Non-steering axles measure approximately 68 inches from rim flange to rim flange.
  • With stock Unimog tires and rims, inside measurement between tires is approximately 53 inches, outside measurement is approximately 78 inches (depending on the exact tire and rim).
  • Pinion length is approximately 19.5 inches (measured to flat mounting surface on yoke).
  • Pinion offset (centerline) is offset approximately 3.75 inches from axle centerline (front on left, rear on right).
  • Distance between upper ball joints is approximately 50.5 inches. Distance between lower ball joints is approximately 54 inches.
  • Clearance with stock Unimog tires (39 inches) is approximately 17.5 inches.
Please inform us if you intend to use a steering axle in a rear application. Contrary to popular belief, the steering axle does need some modifications to survive in a rear axle application.

Unimog 404 Disk Brake Conversion Kits
Description:
Bar none, this is the absolute finest quality disk brake conversion kit for Unimog 404 axles on the market today! Features of this kit include:
  • All-new CNC'd hub, 3-piece design machined from 8620 steel, the same as gears for maximum strength! This design incorporates a labyrinth seal guard, and does not require removal of the hub (a big task) to change/inspect rotors.
  • Labyrinth seal guard unique in Unimog 404 disk brake conversion kits, to properly protect the lower hub seal from the elements. If this seal fails, your portal will lose oil, heat, and eventually fail. You do not want this to occur under any circumstances. A rotor normally leaves this seal wide open, and this seal guard is manditory to provide the same protection as the original drum brake design.
  • Water-cut and machined caliper mounts from heavy, graded material for maximum strength. These mounts are stronger than the original portal casting, so we also use more mounting locations to the original portal than any other disk brake design.
  • Design verified by engineers, not by a mechanic who may have done brake jobs in the past.
  • Properly graded mounting hardware is provided.
  • Dual piston domestic (Ford) 1-ton calipers are used. Forget the competition using expensive calipers off light sports cars. They think they've got the strongest kit? Ask them to prove it! These calipers come from vehicles with GCWR's best measured in tons! Why is this important? We're using tire/rim combinations weighing 100, 200, 300, even 400lbs each! Our 4x4's weigh up to 9000 pounds! You need good, strong calipers whose design can maintain safe braking by properly dissipating the heat build-up that occurs with heavy 4x4 and tire/rim combinations. A car caliper, whether 4-piston or not, was never intended for this application, which is why we use strong 1-ton truck calipers that match the GVWR of the Unimog axles.
  • 8 on 6.5 rim bolt pattern for use with stock Mog rims (ideal to minimize scrub radius) but will work with 16 inch rims with stock backspacing.
This kit is essentially a bolt-on kit. There is no caliper grinding is involved, and the only portal clearancing takes about 1 minute with a die grinder.

Remember, brakes are certainly the last place you want to compromise and save money.

Included are: instructions, brackets, new hub, and mounting hardware.

    Unimog 404 Axle Steering Solutions
    Description:
Stock Unimog steering has the tie rod behind the axle tube, and the drag link in front. For some applications, the tie rod aft of the axle tube is not an option due to (e.g.) coil-link control arms. As well, not all applications can use the stock drag link, due to the limited travel in the tie rod end. We provide HD drag link and tie rod solutions using 1.5” O.D. 3/8” wall DOM. Upgrading your steering may even be cheaper than replacing worn tie rod ends on your current Unimog axle.

Steeply angled drag links, whether straight or bent, will still induce undesirable (and at times dangerous) bump steer. Drop pitman arms are not always available or suitable for a particular application. The high steer arm is sometimes the only correct solution, since it raises the tie rod mount to above the entire portal assembly. High enough, in fact, to make sure that the tie rod can go over any leaf spring pack that is used to locate the axle. It is machined as a bolt-on assembly, but will not work with the original factory drum brakes. This requirement is due to the multiple mounting locations to ensure maximum strength and safety. There is no welding on these steering components which is in compliance with many local safety laws.

    Hybrid Axles
    Description:
There are many considerations that have to be weighed before choosing a Unimog 404 axle. Axle width, pinion length, and pinion location are the primary concerns that we’ve encountered, making these axles undesirable in stock form for some vehicles. For that reason, we can build hybrid axles to suit your particular application. Various center sections can be used, ranging from a Dana 44, to a Ford 9-inch, to a Toyota 8” mini-truck. We can supply center sections complete, or build an axle from your existing components. Call for pricing for your particular application.
